How I Recycle

How I recycle
Hello Friends!
Today I wanted to share how I personally recycle. I am in college at the University of Houston main campus(Go Coogs). I live on campus which gives me plenty of access to resources to recycle, but at the same time my college does not recycle everything. If you are a fellow Coog and want to learn about what you can and cannot recycle and the different sustainability resourcesclick here.

I recently decided I want to take sustainability more seriously, also why I started this blog. I started by recycling paper, I would sort put my paper products in a separate bin and put them in the blue recycling bin in the trash rooms. After looking at the sustainability office's website I realized we at UH single stream recycle. This means we put all recyclable items together and they sort them at their facility. This makes recycling super easy for students. I have mentioned this in a previous post which you can find here.

The only problem is with housing and recycling is I do not think our cleaning services separate trash from recycling so I started taking my recycling items outside to a near by recycling bin.

So what do I do?
First I use these cute red bins to sort what my recycling. At UH you cannot recycle plastic bags, so I take these to the HEB I shop at or the near by Wal-Mart that have containers for plastic bags. I'm not sure about glass and metal cans so I take these to the recycling center for Houston. Everything else goes into the other bin which I take outside to recycle here at the university.

Food containers that I recycle I clean out before putting them in the bins. Things like coffee creamer, pickle jars or milk jugs I wash before they get recycled. This is asked by recycling places, but also helps reduce the nasty smells in your room.

I started out small and now I try to recycle as much as I can and buy things that are either not packaged or in packages that can be recycled. Everyone can do it. It doesn't mean starting with big steps but starting small and working your way up really helps reduce landfill waste.
