I wanted to take sometime to update everyone on how I have been doing with living a more sustainable life. I really want this blog to be a place for people at all stages of their sustainability journey and I do not want anyone to feel like they have to be perfect to engage on here, because let me tell you, I am not perfect and this is definitely a journey. I want to update you on where I am at and my plans to keep improving.
I started my journey back on one of my first post about green living. This post shows how I started and what I was doing in the beginning.
I started by getting three boxes to sort my recyclables. The thing I learned real quick was there are a lot of items I consume that can be recycled so my boxes filled up really quickly and I am super lazy and I did not feel like taking them out every time they got filled up which was twice a week or more. Now I realize I need a bigger container to put it in so I don't have to make so many trips and so it is easier to carry.
When I first started this journey, I learned a lot about how much plastic impacts our environment. At work I normally get a coffee from McDonald's. I would stop using straws and just drink from the cup. Even with drinks that came with a meal, I would drink from the cup and not get a lid. The hardest part for me was when I got smoothies or when I went through the drive threw. I would still slack and get the plastic straw with my drink.
I also struggled a lot when I was shopping. If I forgot my reusable bags I had to use plastic bags. And then I realized so much of our produce is wrapped in plastic. This made reduce plastic hard. How I did it was using reusable bags and when I did use plastic bags I saved them to bring them back to the store to recycle. When I was shopping and I saw things in plastic that had options not in plastic, like rice or corn, I would buy the item not wrapped in plastic. So rice in a box versus a bag or corn in a can not in a freezer bag.
What I Ate
A lot of waste in America comes from food and a lot of pollution comes from the production of meat. I decided to reduce the amount of meat I eat and now I am a vegetarian full time. I am truly happy with my life now that I made this choice. I have been doing this since November and it has made me feel better all around.
How Am I Planning on Improving
Let me know in the comments if you have any other suggestions to help reduce waste and live more sustainable in the comments. Also let me know how your journey is going.
